Discounts

Discounts reduce eligible selling prices. Gift cards, store credit, and captured payments are tenders—not discounts. Order-time per-line allocations are snapshotted and drive later refunds. See Financial semantics.

Discounts live under Discounts in your store admin. Every discount is one of four types, delivered either as a code the buyer types in or as an automatic discount that applies on its own when the conditions match.

The four discount types

When you click Create discount, you pick one of these — the type is fixed for the life of the discount and decides which value options you see.

TypeWhat it doesValue options
Amount off productsMarks down specific products or collectionsPercentage off, or a fixed amount off
Amount off orderMarks down the whole order subtotalPercentage off, or a fixed amount off
Free shippingRemoves shipping chargesFree shipping (with optional rate cap)
Buy X Get YBuy qualifying items, get others free or discountedFree, percentage off, or amount off the “get” items

Code vs automatic

MethodHow buyers get it
Discount codeThe buyer enters the code at checkout (e.g. SAVE20)
AutomaticApplies by itself whenever its conditions match — no code needed

For a code discount you set the Code; there’s a refresh button beside the field that generates a random readable code (like K7QF-9MRT). For an automatic discount you set a Title that buyers see on the cart instead of a code.

Creating each type

Every type shares the same eligibility, minimum, combination, usage-limit, scheduling, and channel sections (covered below). The steps differ only in the value and applies to parts.

Amount off products

  1. Go to Discounts → Create discount → Amount off products.

  2. Choose Discount code or Automatic and set the code or title.

  3. Under Discount value, pick Percentage (e.g. 10%) or Fixed amount (e.g. ₹200 off).

  4. Under Discount applies to, choose Specific products or Specific collections, then use Manage products / Manage collections to pick them. For products you can include all variants or specific variants.

  5. For a fixed-amount product discount, optionally tick Once per order so the amount comes off once rather than per matching item.

  6. Set eligibility, minimums, combinations, limits, schedule, and channels, then Create discount.

Amount off order

  1. Go to Discounts → Create discount → Amount off order.

  2. Choose code or automatic and set the code or title.

  3. Under Discount value, pick Percentage or Fixed amount — this comes off the whole order subtotal. There’s no product/collection picker; it applies order-wide.

  4. Set the remaining sections and Create discount.

Free shipping

  1. Go to Discounts → Create discount → Free shipping.

  2. Choose code or automatic and set the code or title.

  3. Under Shipping, choose All countries or Selected countries. For selected countries, enter comma-separated country codes (e.g. IN,US,GB).

  4. Optionally tick Exclude shipping rates over a certain amount and enter a cap — shipping is then only made free when the rate is at or below that amount, so an expensive express rate isn’t waived by a basic free-shipping code.

  5. Set the remaining sections and Create discount.

Buy X Get Y (BOGO)

This is the type that powers “buy one get one”, “buy 2 get 1 free”, and similar offers.

  1. Go to Discounts → Create discount → Buy X Get Y.

  2. Choose code or automatic and set the code or title.

  3. Under Customer buys, choose the requirement: Minimum quantity of items or Minimum purchase amount (₹), and enter the value. Then pick whether the “buy” items come from specific products or specific collections and select them.

  4. Under Customer gets, set the Quantity the buyer receives, and pick the “get” products or collections.

  5. Under At a discounted value, choose Free, Percentage off, or Amount off each for the “get” items.

  6. Optionally set Max uses per order to cap how many times the offer can repeat within a single cart (e.g. so “buy 1 get 1” only applies once).

  7. Set the remaining sections and Create discount.

Customer eligibility

In the Eligibility section, choose who can use the discount. The three options are mutually exclusive:

  • Everyone — any shopper.
  • Specific customer segments — only customers in the segments you select. Segments are dynamic, so eligibility updates as customers enter or leave them. See customers and segments.
  • Specific customers — only the individual customers you pick.

For the segment and customer-list options you select the targets with Manage segments / Manage customers. Eligibility is checked against the signed-in customer at checkout.

Dynamic segment membership is computed asynchronously. A segment whose current rules are still queued, marked stale, or failed is not allowed to grant a discount. The customer becomes eligible only after the refreshed membership is successfully published; an older snapshot is never used to give away money.

Minimum purchase requirements

In Minimum purchase requirements, choose one of three mutually exclusive options:

  • No minimum requirements — applies regardless of cart size.
  • Minimum purchase amount (₹) — the qualifying subtotal must reach this amount.
  • Minimum quantity of items — the cart must contain at least this many items.

Combinations (stacking)

The Combinations section has three independent checkboxes that say which other discounts this one is allowed to stack with:

  • Product discounts
  • Order discounts
  • Shipping discounts

Two discounts only combine when both of them allow the other’s class — the check is mutual, not one-sided. So if a product discount allows order discounts but the order discount does not allow product discounts, they won’t stack.

Worked example. You run a 10% order discount and a separate free-shipping code. To let a buyer use both, the order discount must have Shipping discounts ticked and the free-shipping discount must have Order discounts ticked. If only one side is ticked, the checkout applies whichever combination is best for the buyer and skips the other.

Usage limits

In Maximum discount uses there are two independent switches:

  • Limit number of times this discount can be used in total — a store-wide cap. Enter the maximum number of redemptions.
  • Limit to one use per customer — each customer can redeem it only once.

You can turn on either, both, or neither.

Scheduling and status

In Active dates, set a Start date & time (required) and optionally toggle Set end date to add an expiry. Discounts activate and expire on their own — you don’t flip a switch. You enter the date and time in your browser’s local time; the discount summary then shows the window in your store timezone.

A discount’s status reflects its schedule automatically:

StatusMeaning
ScheduledStart time is in the future; not yet usable
ActiveCurrently within its window and usable
ExpiredEnd time has passed

Sales channels

Also in Active dates, two checkboxes control where the discount is available:

  • Online store enabled — usable on your storefront checkout.
  • POS enabled — usable at point of sale.

Both are on by default. Turn one off to restrict the discount to a single channel — for example an online-only promo code.

How buyers apply and see it

At storefront checkout, buyers can enter discount codes, and more than one code can be entered at once — the checkout works out the best valid combination under your combination rules. Codes are case-insensitive and surrounding or extra whitespace is normalized, so save20, SAVE20, and Save 20 are treated the same.

Applied discounts appear as line allocations in the cart and order: the cart shows the code (or automatic discount’s title) with the amount taken off, and the order records exactly how much was allocated to each line. Your theme renders these through the discount_application and discount_allocation Liquid objects.

Managing existing discounts

From the Discounts list you can:

  • Search by title or code.
  • Sort by created date, title, status, start date, or usage count.
  • Filter by status (Scheduled / Active / Expired) and toggle Show active only.
  • Edit a discount — open it to change any field. Editing a code discount’s code changes the code buyers must type.
  • Duplicate a discount to spin up a similar one without re-entering everything.
  • Delete a discount (you’ll be asked to confirm).

Marketing with discounts

Combine discounts with the built-in marketing tools: share codes in campaign emails to a segment, attach them to abandoned-checkout recovery, or generate trackable short links and QR codes for offline promotion — every redemption is attributed back to the campaign.

Troubleshooting

A code stops working after a while. The total-usage cap has been reached. Once a capped discount runs out, the next checkout reports that the discount is no longer available rather than failing silently. Raise the cap or create a new discount.

An automatic discount isn’t applying. Check, in order: the minimum requirement (subtotal or quantity) is met; the buyer qualifies under eligibility; the channel checkbox for where they’re shopping is on; the schedule window is currently open (not Scheduled or Expired); and that no combination conflict is blocking it.

Two discounts won’t stack. Combinations are mutual — confirm both discounts allow the other’s class in their Combinations section. Remember that two free-shipping discounts never combine.

A percentage discount took off less than expected. When multiple discounts apply, each later percentage is calculated on the already-reduced amount, not the original price — stacked percentages don’t simply add up.
